Judges Critique - OESCA 2014 National Specialty

2014 National Specialty ResultsBy Ray Owen

"I consider myself to be a very lucky person. I have just enjoyed the most delightful holiday in the USA, topped off with judging one of the most iconic shows on the global OES calendar. Earlier in the year it was Cruft’s, last year the Euro Show in Holland, now OESCA in Portland, Oregon. Happy days…. We, Angela my wife, and myself, made our way up to the north-west tip of the States by plane from Phoenix, having enjoyed a 2000+ mile journey by car around Arizona and a tiny part of Utah. I have covered our trip with a ‘travelblog’ on my Facebook page under my web name ‘Shaggy Amblegait Bobtail’. Please befriend me and enjoy the journey and the ‘read’. We were met at Portland airport by Elise and taken to the Red Lion Hotel in Salem, about 26 miles from the show ‘action’. The American Club do like to quarantine judges well away from possible interference by ‘savage’ exhibitors (I joke). I have expressed my views about this code of conduct before, but I realise you must do what you think best. We were lucky to have Margie, a neighbour of the organisers, as our ‘escort, bodyguard, chauffeur’ and she made the long journeys back and forth both entertaining and informative, She is an experienced ‘horse’ lady, so no doggy connections to worry about. The OESCA 2014 speciality was located at the Linn Showgrounds in Albany and we had the huge indoor, cavernous halls at our disposal. The show covers all aspects of the OES capabilities, herding, agility, obedience and conformation (the beauty show) and it lasts a full week. I was judging the ‘beauty’ show dog (male) section on my birthday, the 22nd October, so a double treat for me, and then I judged the bitches on the 23rd. My heart sank as I entered the huge arena on the first morning, there were no people around, the place seemed lifeless and the show just started with no fanfares, no introductions,  just a few puppies ambling into the huge ring. My steward was Marlene Larson and her husband was the Show Manager, Glen Larson. They have been in the breed for a long time and are approaching their 80th birthdays.  Many thanks for their efforts. I always take lots of ‘oral’ notes on all the dogs I judge and provide a written critique after the show. I go over each dog thoroughly and carefully with ‘tender’ hands feeling for bone structure, coat quality and all those hidden ‘extras’. Bobtail temperament should allow for this thorough examination and it saddened me that quite a few younger exhibits shied away or seemed nervous in the ring. This is not acceptable in a pastoral breed that is bred for guarding the flock. Please remember the ‘fit for function’ edict that is being rolled out to compliment the breed standard. I was delighted to be judging an entry of real ‘bobtails’. Not a tail in sight, a true traditional heaven for me. The overall standard was high. The presentation and handling was generally superb. Only a few were matted, mainly between the front legs up on the chest or around the inside groin area. Several were ‘wearing’ too much ‘product’, sprays, lacquer, whatever and a few were still wet from ‘water?’ along the neck. All this ‘stuff’ should be removed from the dog before it comes into the ring. I chuckled when I saw ‘cornstarch’ paw prints being left in the trail around the ring perimeter, followed by white footprints. My other concern before I judged was the ‘over grooming’, excess scissoring and ‘sculpturing’ that goes on. I was pleasantly surprised at the low incidence of this poor practice, maybe the usual suspects stayed away, knowing my aversion to it. A few were trimmed to excess around the ‘rump and stump’, and one had a funny pair of ears thanks to the scissors. I also noted one that had been clipped right down at some time and was struggling to regain their ‘former glory’.  Coat quality is a major concern, so few had a real harsh coat that also had the required undercoat and the sought after ‘break’. Quite a few had too much brown in an adult coat and were penalised. Rear ends are your strong point in the USA and were a big bonus, so strong in both muscle and construction and often showed itself in good strong movement. If handlers would only move their ‘charges’ on a loose lead, a few more dogs would lower their heads and reach out in front. Tight leads result in a high head and mincing movement in front, negating the drive from the rear end. My other ‘sore’ point is the length of neck. This is a global issue and not only a problem in the USA. Too many OES have a ‘stuffy’ neck, not enough reach and this spoils the overall balance. A bobtail needs to lay in the pasture and survey his flock. A short neck is a disadvantage. My winners all pleased me and looked ‘typical’. Type should always be the number one priority in any judge’s mind and personal preferences or minor details should never come in the way of finding the best OES that fits the standard. I am happy to supply a critique of what I found on every dog I judged, just email me and I will reply with the details.  After the second day’s judging, which was such a joy for me, (even with the presence of the AKC official giving me the benefit of his wisdom and trying to get me to hurry up) we enjoyed a super meal of Baron of beef and River salmon followed by a local marion berry pie with superb local wine and beers. After some short speeches, a local band struck up with the help of the vocal skills of an OESCA member, Merilie Rush, famous for her big hit ‘Angel in the morning’. The dancing only lasted an hour and I missed out on shaping some moves on the dance floor, but most people chatted and enjoyed a chance to share stories and experiences. I look forward to meeting up again and watching progress at next year’s event. Many thanks to Lita, Dianne and Doug and of course Margie for all your help and hospitality. My notes will hopefully make the next edition of the ‘Times’ and I am always happy to take emails at owen@amblegait.co.uk"
